Americas TB Coalition launched

A regional coalition of TB activists working at a domestic and regional level to increase funding for TB programs, promote the right to health, and press for comprehensive and integrated TB prevention, diagnosis, care and support.

December 8, 2016, Mexico City: Tuberculosis (TB) activists from 17 countries from the Americas region gathered in Mexico City on November 28, 29 and 30 for a workshop on political advocacy on TB, conducted by the Global TB Caucus. 

The workshop brought together a diverse group of academics, members of TB patients' organisations, TB-HIV activists, TB survivors and CSOs from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela. The delegates shared their experiences of working on TB, and committed to working together to help drive the region towards the end of TB by 2030.

At the conclusion of the meeting, delegates launched the Americas TB Coalition, a regional coalition of individuals and CSOs working at a domestic and regional level to increase funding for TB programs, promote the right to health, and press for comprehensive and integrated TB prevention, diagnosis, care and support.

The Coalition will work in partnership with the Global Coalition of TB Activists, and looks forward to working with the TB Europe Coalition and ACT in the Asia-Pacific to bring about the end of TB.

The Coalition has committed to the following steps:

  1. To work with the Americas network of the Global TB Caucus to support parliamentarians in pressing for more domestic resources to fight TB, and better policies to combat the disease.
  2. Working with other CSOs on an integrated agenda for TB advocacy.
  3. Raising the profile of TB among media platforms throughout the year.
  4. Pressing for a holistic TB response from communities, civil society, government, academia and legislatures.
  5. Supporting TB community and activist movements.

The Coalition will have regular virtual meetings and would like to invite other members of civil society from across the Americas region to join.
