The final results from the STREAM Stage 1 trial, which compared 9-11 months of standardized treatment using older drugs (the so-called modified "Bangladesh" regimen) to the 2011 World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended treatment, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The results showed that the STREAM Stage 1 experimental regimen was non-inferior to the old WHO-recommended regimen. However, this shorter regimen contains multiple toxic and less effective medicines, including injectables that cause hearing loss, that are no longer prioritized in the 2018 WHO treatment recommendations.
