HIVR4P 2016 Journalist Fellowship announcement

HIVR4P
April 7, 2016, 11:01 a.m.

HIV Research for Prevention 2016 (HIVR4P 2016)  (17-21 October 2016, Chicago, IL) is the world’s only scientific meeting dedicated exclusively to biomedical HIV prevention research. As part of its commitment to supporting media representatives around the world who are working to transmit the latest news on approaches to stopping the global epidemic, HIVR4P will provide fellowships to attend and cover HIVR4P 2016 to approximately 25 print, broadcast or electronic media journalists. HIVR4P journalist fellows receive conference registration, transportation to and from Chicago, accommodation, most meals and a per diem.

The Journalists Fellowship application process is open now and will close on 10 June 2016. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply early. More information about the application process, and an online application form, are available here.

HIVR4P supports cross-fertilization among research on HIV vaccines, microbicides, PrEP, treatment as prevention and other biomedical prevention approaches, while also providing a venue to discuss the research findings, questions and priorities specific to each. More than 1,300 leaders in HIV prevention research, programs and policy attended the first biennial HIVR4P conference in Cape Town in 2014.

The HIVR4P Journalist Fellowship Program gives experienced and early-career journalists from around the world a close-up opportunity to learn about the latest developments in HIV prevention research and report on advances and challenges in the field to a global audience. This highly selective program provides a full scholarship to attend HIVR4P to journalists who have demonstrated a particular commitment to covering the epidemic. A pre-conference training on all aspects of HIV prevention science, led by some of the most accomplished researchers and advocates in the field, helps journalist fellows prepare to report on the prevention research developments presented at HIVR4P. Fellows attend daily briefings and press conferences and have use of a professional, on-site media center.

This opportunity is highly selective. Successful candidates will have a track record of high-quality reporting on HIV/AIDS issues, the support of their media outlet to attend and report on the conference and strong English language skills. All fellows must commit to be in Chicago from 16 October, when the training program begins, through the conclusion of the conference on 21 October, 2016.
