KwaZulu-Natal launches HIV, TB plan
DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal government wants to reduce the transmission of HIV from mother to child to less than 1.4 percent, premier Zweli Mkhize said on Wednesday.
"These ambitious targets demonstrate government's commitment to take this province into another trajectory of socio-economic development," he said.
He was speaking during the launch of KwaZulu-Natal HIV and Aids and tuberculosis (TB) strategic plan in Pietermaritzburg.
The current HIV transmission rate from mother to child sits at around 2.8 percent.
With the new plan, the province hoped to reduce decrease by 80 percent behaviours that put men and women at risk of contracting HIV, Aids, sexual transmitted infections and TB by 2016.
It would see the rolling out of male circumcision services increased to 80 percent.
"We also want to ensure that 80 percent of men and women aged between 15 and 49 know their HIV status and receive TB screening," Mkhize said.
