Strengthening labs and introducing new tools for increased case detection and earlier diagnosis of TB
An edition of HATIP
This edition of HATIP looks at the relationship between strengthening of laboratory diagnostic capacity and intensified case finding for TB in people living with HIV.
In particular it looks at the performance of symptom screens for TB and the extent to which newer diagnostic techniques such as liquid culture and GeneXpert can improve the detection of TB in people living with HIV.
It also examines the controversies regarding the detection of active, recent or transient infection when using more sensitive diagnostic techniques, and includes expert discussion from a range of TB specialists who have been considering these issues.
You can also read the full expert discussion on these issues at the HATIP blog, and contribute to the discussion.
This article is the first of two editions that will examine the issues involved in strengthening laboratory diagnostic capacity.
This edition of HATIP was kindly supported by the Lilly MDR-TB Partnership.
