Tuberculosis detected at early stages in Azerbaijan
Tuberculosis is detected at early stages in Azerbaijan, Director of the Scientific-Research Institute of Lung Diseases, Eljan Mammadbayov said at an event held on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, marked on March 24.
He said that the number of tuberculosis patients increases in Azerbaijan. Last year the country registered 2,045 cases of tuberculosis. In 2010 this figure was 1997, and in 2009 - 1,487.
The World Health Organization (WHO) together with partners work on 10 new vaccines and medicaments to prevent tuberculosis, Infectious Disease Specialist at the WHO Azerbaijan Office Javahir Suleymanova said.
She said that the WHO is working to reduce the deaths from tuberculosis till 2015. Over the last 20 years, mortality from this disease decreased by 40 percent. In 2010 the number of tuberculosis cases decreased by 8.8 million.
Tuberculosis is one of the three main causes of death among 15-44 year old women in the world.
The achievements in the fight against tuberculosis are under threat in the world due to the low level of financing, Suleymanova said.
