TB Europe Coalition: Urge your Member of EU Parliament to sign Written Declaration 0007/2013 on DR-TB

Together, let’s use this great opportunity to put TB higher on the political agenda of the EU!

A Written Declaration (WD) on the threat of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) to the European region was launched in the European Parliament on 15 April 2013. A written declaration is an advocacy tool, such as written or oral questions but with a greater scope. It raises awareness on the cost and threat of DR-TB to the European region and contains two recommendations calling on the European Commission and Council to financially and politically back the Global Fund 2013 replenishment and the WHO Europe’s Roadmap on drug-resistant tuberculosis.

The TB Europe Coalition mobilised 14 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from 6 different political groups and 10 different countries to sponsor the WD.

It is great news that this WD has been launched, but the hard work only really starts NOW. If we want this WD to pass, we need the support of at least the majority of the MEPs, this means we need 377 signatories in only three months’ time. If we succeed, our recommendations will be forwarded to the legislative and executive branches of the European institutions for follow-up. This could potentially pave the way for stronger legislation on TB in the future.

In order to get as much support as we can, the TB Europe Coalition will lead the campaign for the coming months in the hope of getting the necessary amount of signatures. In addition of our advocacy work in the European Parliament, we would also like to involve EU citizens.

How can you help?

You can contact your representative in the European Parliament (called MEPs) and encourage them to sign Written Declaration 0007/2013 on the threat of drug-resistant tuberculosis to the European region. To this end, we developed a toolkit in 8 EU languages.

What does the toolkit contains?

The Written Declaration in all EU languages
A 1-page background note on the Written Declaration explaining how you can help
A sample letter translated in 8 EU languages which you can copy paste in an email to your MEP
The list of MEPs by country and constituency with their contact details.

How does it work?

It only takes 5 minutes! Basically you just need to copy paste the sample letter in an email, add your details, and send it to all MEPs from your country and/or constituency. You will find the contact details of your MEPs in the contact list we prepared. For bigger EU member states who have constituencies/electoral zones you just need to use the filers to find your MEPs (ie: Italy, France, United Kingdom, Germany). For smaller countries, you can contact all MEPs (ie: Belgium, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Romania).
