PNG facing health emergency with discovery of drug-resistant TB

Health authorities in Papua New Guinea say an almost incurable strain of tuberculosis has been found in the capital Port Moresby.

Two residents have been diagnosed with extensively drug-resistant TB, but there are fears they are only the first of what will be many more cases.

A health emergency has been declared in an effort to track down TB patients who have stopped taking they're treatment to prevent more cases from developing.

And Australian health experts are worried about the potential for drug-resistant tuberculosis to spread south from Port Moresby.
