The World Health Organization releases advocacy and communications materials to support awareness building and promotion in the lead up to and on World TB Day.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board reviewed a report of the WHO Director-General on the follow-up to the UN High-Level Meeting on TB held in September 2018.

25 January 2018 | Seoul, Republic of Korea – An outcome statement to step up action to end TB was released today outlining pledges of support from civil society, countries and partners. The statement highlights key opportunities, actions and next steps to empower and strengthen community and civil society engagement to end TB, and is the culmination of a landmark consultation organized by the WHO Regional Office of the Western Pacific and the Korean Institute of Tuberculosis (KIT) on 11-13 December. The workshop brought together more than 40 participants from countries and partners, including the regional members of the revamped WHO Civil Society Task Force to strengthen global and regional mechanisms for civil society engagement.

A new Tuberculosis Regional Eastern European and Central Asian Project, referred to as TB-REP 2.0, has been launched. This project for 2019 to 2022, building on the previous TB-REP from 2016 to 2018, will consolidate past achievements and address new and remaining challenges while ensuring continuity. In particular, it will focus on improving tuberculosis (TB) prevention and care outcomes.

To strengthen and streamline the joint response to tuberculosis (TB), HIV and viral hepatitis in the WHO European Region, the WHO-established European Laboratory Initiative on TB extended its scope to HIV and viral hepatitis. Through this development, WHO aims to address more effectively the specific needs of the Region.

The updated WHO treatment guidelines recommend that drug-resistant TB be treated with oral drugs only, including newer, more potent drugs with fewer side effects.

The World Health Organization has revamped its Civil Society Task Force on TB to strengthen collaboration for accelerating progress towards ending TB.

The past twelve months have seen unparalleled attention to the global TB response. In less than a year, the fight to end TB has been in the spotlight twice with two high-level meetings: the first WHO Global Ministerial Conference on Ending TB held in Moscow in November 2017 and the first-ever United Nations High-Level Meeting on the fight to end TB held in New York in September 2018.

06 November 2018 | Geneva: To advance the development of new treatments against all forms of TB and maximize the impact of studies and trials undertaken in this area, WHO and partners have initiated a series of pioneering initiatives over the past few years. These are now bearing fruit.
