22 July 2018 | AMSTERDAM: The TB and HIV co-epidemic was in the spotlight at the 22^nd International AIDS Conference, “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges”, which took place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and was attended by more than 15,000 delegates. The World Health Organization delegation was led by the Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who opened the conference calling on delegates to harness the same energy and passion, and the same resources used to respond to HIV, in order to achieve universal health coverage, asserting that this is how we will defeat AIDS and build a healthier safer world for everyone, everywhere. This message is also essential for ending TB and ensuring people-centred care and prevention for all.

Abuja, 22 May 2018 – In March 2017, Sunny who works as a fashion designer in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital, started coughing, experiencing chest pains, toe pain, and frequent headaches. The discomfort that came with these symptoms became unbearable and was beginning to affect his work so he decided to go to the hospital for a checkup.  To his surprise he tested positive for Tuberculosis (TB) when the results were out. 

The Ministry of Health, Kenya, has embarked on a new, robust approach to evaluate evidence for informing the next National Strategic Plan on Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Lung Health (2019-2023). A workshop, convened from April 17- 19 2018, reviewed consolidated national data and incorporated the extensive evidence base of critical studies and surveys on the TB situation. This was done to identify root causes of the epidemic, establish priorities and map out future actions.

The World Health Organization publishes its first Essential Diagnostics List, a catalogue of the tests needed to diagnose the most common conditions as well as a number of global priority diseases.
