Faster diagnostic tests developed for TB (post)
Tuberculosis claims two million lives each year globally. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent spread, outbreaks, and development of resistance. Scientists at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute here and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi have jointly developed highly sensitive and rapid tests for detection of tuberculosis infection in lungs and surrounding membranes.
PET scans to optimize TB meningitis treatments and personalize care, study finds (post)
Although relatively rare in the United States, and accounting for fewer than 5 percent of tuberculosis cases worldwide, TB of the brain--or tuberculosis meningitis (TBM)--is often deadly, always hard to treat, and a particular threat to young children. It may leave survivors with lifelong brain damage. Now, researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine report they have used PET scans, a rabbit model and a specially tagged version of the TB drug rifampin to advance physicians' understanding of this disease by showing precisely how little rifampin ever reaches the sites of TB infection in the brain.

TREATS and King’s College London collaboration awarded funding to develop a new TB diagnostic (post)
Tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s leading infectious disease killer, with 10 million people falling ill with active TB disease every year. A critical part of the End TB Strategy is to not only treat and cure the millions with active TB disease, but also to be able to prevent people from developing active disease in the first place.
