As 2015 marks the end of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and a transition to the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the global community is taking stock of progress made as well as the unmet needs looking forward. A key component in the effort to address global health challenges has been donor funding from governments and multilateral organizations. Indeed, while domestic funding has increased, and in some areas now constitutes a greater share of total available resources, donor funding will continue to play a significant role in achieving the SDGs. This analysis presents trends in donor funding for health in low- and middle-income countries between 2002 and 2013.

The Center for Global Development (CGD) published two blog posts related to the release of its new report, titled Aligning Incentives, Accelerating Impact. The report “addresses the how of next generation financing models — that is, the concrete steps needed to change the basis of payment from expenses to something else: outputs, outcomes, or impact,” and is the result of the Next Generation Financing Models in Global Health Working Group, co-chaired with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

WHO members commit to SDGs for 2030, despite some differences (post)
During the Executive Board meeting at the World Health Organization this week, member states agreed on committing to the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. The consensus reached by member states was that direct health development goals such as the continuous effort to rid the world of malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis C are at the forefront of pressing issues. But goals for health and those for related issues should be worked on together as they are mutually beneficial, they said.

May 27, 2016 - According to a new report, by 2050, some 10 million lives could be lost a year due to antimicrobial resistance. This is an issue which has been central to this year’s World Health Assembly, and is of global consequence. Delegates gathered for the occasion noted a report by the World Health Organization secretariat on the global action plan on antimicrobial resistance adopted last year and options to develop a global stewardship framework to try to limit the use of antibiotics and develop new ones.
