ViiV Healthcare announces dolutegravir data for the treatment of HIV/TB co-infection (post)
ViiV Healthcare announces positive new dolutegravir data for the treatment of people living with HIV co-infected with tuberculosis
INSPIRING study results contribute to the extensive body of evidence for dolutegravir, the leading integrase strand transfer inhibitor, in diverse and hard to treat patient populations
One-month TB prophylaxis as effective as nine-month regimen for people living with HIV (post)
A one-month antibiotic regimen to prevent active tuberculosis (TB) disease was at least as safe and effective as the standard nine-month therapy for people living with HIV, according to the results of a large international clinical trial. Adults and adolescents in the trial were more likely to complete the short-course regimen — consisting of daily doses of the antibiotics rifapentine and isoniazid for four weeks—than the standard nine-month regimen of daily isoniazid.
New TB screening methods cut deaths in people with HIV (post)
Screening for TB and intensified follow-up of TB cases in people starting antiretroviral therapy and urine-based screening of inpatients with HIV both have the potential to significantly reduce deaths and improve rates of TB treatment in people with HIV, according to results of two large studies presented at CROI 2018 on Monday in Boston.
Once-daily tenofovir alafenamide appears sufficient when dosed with rifampicin (post)
Plasma concentrations of tenofovir alafenamide AUC were decreased by 55% and intracellular tenofovir-diphosphate concentrations by 36% when given with rifampicin. But intracellular concentrations were still 76% higher than those with standard dose tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.
Higher rifampin doses safe for patients with pulmonary TB (post)
BOSTON — Results of a phase 2 randomized clinical trial show that up to twice the standard daily dose of rifampin was safe in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. The findings suggest that TB therapy can be shortened using higher doses, which could potentially improve outcomes without increasing toxicity.
Daily therapy superior to intermittent for TB in patients with HIV (post)
A daily antituberculosis regimen prevented rifampicin resistance and was more effective than an intermittent regimen among patients with HIV with pulmonary tuberculosis who were receiving antiretroviral therapy, according to findings published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Preventive TB therapy during pregnancy causes excessive adverse events (post)
BOSTON — Researchers reported that the immediate initiation of isoniazid preventive therapy for tuberculosis during pregnancy produced an unexpectedly high incidence rate of severe treatment-related adverse events among women with HIV. However, they said the rate was comparable to that among women who initiated therapy postpartum, suggesting that women should be given a choice of when to initiate therapy.
Shared goals for TB and HIV (post)
The theme of this year's World Tuberculosis Day March 24 is “Unite to end TB”. As part of the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs), WHO has set ambitious targets for 2030 to reduce the number of tuberculosis deaths by 90% and disease incidence by 80%. These sit beside the 95–95–95 UNAIDS goals for 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of people who know their status receiving treatment, and 95% of people on HIV treatment having a suppressed viral load by 2030.
Largest ever whole-of-population study on the impact of TB and HIV interventions on the burden of TB launched in sub-Saharan African communities (post)
Friday, 23 March 2018 (London, UK) – A new EUR 12.9 million project has been launched, measuring the impact of a combination TB and HIV intervention when delivered to the entire population of 14 urban, high prevalence communities in South Africa and Zambia.
