50th Union World Conference on Lung Health: Prevention trial targets multidrug-resistant TB (post)
HYDERABAD, INDIA – The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is investing $70 million in a phase III clinical trial assessing the use of tuberculosis treatments in preventing multidrug-resistant tuberculosis infection among high-risk individuals, including infected household contacts of MDR-TB patients and people living with HIV, institute officials announced here.
New open access online course in TB prevention launched at Union World Conference (post)
The course, launched today (October 31) during a press conference on TB prevention, is entitled Prevent Tuberculosis: Management of TB Infection. The completely open access and online training programme is geared towards national TB and AIDS programme staff and clinicians, including paediatricians, pneumologists, general practice physicians, clinical officers, nurses and paramedical staff, and other health care workers involved in TB services.

Modified BCG vaccine could prevent TB in cattle and help end culls (post)
A modified version of the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis could allow cattle around the world to be vaccinated against the disease for the first time. At present, the disease is controlled by slaughtering infected cattle and other animals thought to spread it, such as badgers, which has been a source of controversy.

Preventing TB: a big drug price cut paves the way for global scale-up (post)
Lengthy negotiations ended in good news recently when the price of rifapentine, a lifesaving antibiotic, was marked down by 66% by its manufacturer Sanofi. When combined with another antibiotic (isoniazid), rifapentine can prevent tuberculosis (TB) disease. The move was announced at the Union World Conference on Lung Health in October 2019.

Geneva, 30 January 2020 – Unitaid will invest US$ 39 million in two projects to speed up the development of long-acting versions of medicines for low- and middle-income countries. Innovative ways to administer drugs, which have revolutionized contraception and the treatment of schizophrenia, could redefine prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, but remain at early stages of research because of market barriers.
Prevent TB: New open-access course (post)
The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease launched a new open-access online training course, ‘Prevent TB: Management of TB Infection’ aiming to equip clinicians, healthcare workers and national TB program managers with the skills and knowledge to better identify and successfully treat TB infection, with the specific aim of increasing country-level implementation of TB prevention.
