The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted much of the research and development done in the field of tuberculosis (TB) prevention, diagnostics, and treatment measures, as well as shifted the focus away from TB care. Lockdowns and the high burden placed on national healthcare systems has prevented patients from accessing TB diagnostic and treatment services, and it is expected that this will contribute to a significant rise in TB cases worldwide, thus reducing the chances of achieving the SDG, EndTB and UN HLM targets.

A persistent shortfall in TB research and development funding (post)
NEW YORK (April 15, 2021) — The 2020 G-Finder Report, released today, shows that low funding levels are putting life-saving science—and especially the most vulnerable—at risk. Global investments in tuberculosis (TB) research and development (R&D) funding totaled of $670 million in 2019. This is far short of the estimated $2.16 billion that the Stop TB Partnership estimates is needed annually to develop and deliver new tools that can end the TB pandemic, which causes illness in 10 million people each year. These tools include effective vaccines, diagnostics and drug regimens.

The Stop TB Partnership New Tools Working Groups and the Stop TB Partnership NGO and Affected Community Board Delegations are co-developing a self-guided online learning course on new TB drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines. The purpose of the course is to build capacity and strengthen the engagement of advocates, including TB-affected communities and civil society, in the TB research and development agenda.
