Tuberculosis remains a leading cause of death among people living with HIV, accounting for one in five AIDS-related deaths globally. However, between 2004 and 2014, TB deaths declined by 33% thanks to the rapid increase in antiretroviral treatment, which reduces the risk that a person living with HIV will develop TB by 65%.

Between 2000 and 2013, TB prevention, diagnosis and treatment interventions saved an estimated 37 million lives. The TB mortality rate fell by 45 per cent and the prevalence rate by 41 per cent between 1990 and 2013.

As part of its ongoing consultation processes on the possibility of the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) expanding into other disease areas, the organisation has published independent feasibility studies exploring the case for potential entry into hepatitis C and tuberculosis.

Two late-breaker sessions will be held at the 46^th World Conference on Lung Health in Cape Town on 2-6 December 2015. Researchers are invited to submit abstracts for these sessions by 31 July 2015, following the guidelines provided.

The Forum will be held 3-4 September 2015. The call is for nominations from local, regional and international civil society and community organizations and networks from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The deadline for submissions is 15 July 2015.

There needs to be a major scale-up of treatment for MDR tuberculosis that matches the scale-ups that have already been achieved in treatments for HIV and drug-susceptible tuberculosis.

TB is one of the first health arenas in which the issue of private-provider involvement in long-term care is being tackled seriously in low-income countries. The article outlines the current and newer approaches being taken — and the opportunities for more systemic and scalable efforts to engaging private-sector providers in TB control and beyond.

The participants at the regional consultation in Bangkok discussed the need to evolve and change the way in which we work if we really want to End TB – by introducing new thinking, innovations, approaches and ensuring that all interventions include a patient-centered approach.
