The TB Europe Coalition launched a guide for civil society organisations across the European region explaining how to access European Union (EU) funding to support their TB and HIV activities.

On the occasion of World TB Day, the TB Europe Coalition (TBEC) is alarmed by the withdrawal of donor support to TB & HIV programmes in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, dealing a catastrophic blow to patients. While joint efforts from all stakeholders is needed to ensure we do not recede on progress made so far, TBEC calls on the European Commission to play a stronger political convenor role in the region to help achieve a sustainable and effective transition to domestic funding of health systems.

On 17th of February 2016, the Health Working Group of the European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Security (ENVI) organised a workshop on EU response to communicable diseases.

‘Strengthening TB Control in Ukraine’ (STBCU) – a project funded by US Agency for International Development (USAID) – has released results of the pilot study of economic effectiveness and cost analysis of model of TB treatment in Ukraine. The study was conducted in Kriviy Rih (Dnipropetrovsk oblast).

This was reported on May 28, 2015 during a round table at UKRINFORM agency in Kiev “New treatment regimens for Drug-Resistant TB, based on the newest available drugs” organised by Public Movement “Ukrainians against TB” and the Yanovsky National TB Institute, by head of the TB Institute Department of Chemo-resistant TB Svetlana Cherenko.

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on its next European Neighboorhood Policy. The TB Europe Coalition answers suggesting greater focus be placed on health at the political level. The consultation is open until 30 June. As part of a TB Europe Coalition (TBEC) series of field visit, three members of TBEC visited Belarus in November 2014.

At the conclusion of the first Eastern Partnership Ministerial Conference on Tuberculosis and Its Multidrug-Resistance, the TB Europe Coalition applauds the approval of the Riga Declaration by Ministers of Health, Finance and Social Affairs from across European Union Member States and Eastern Partnership countries.

A new report by the TB Europe Coalition, “After Aid: What is next for TB and HIV in Europe”, illustrates the potentially devastating impact of donor withdrawal on a range of countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where the tuberculosis and HIV epidemics are still problematic.
