Use of the GeneXpert TB system for HIV viral load testing in India (post)
"...the Xpert HIV-1 Viral Load (Cepheid) cartridge was launched in 2014, as a potential point-of-care, rapid viral load assay. However, before the Xpert HIV-1 Viral Load cartridge can be clinically used in India, validation is essential. In March, 2017, Xpert HIV-1 Viral Load cartridges were approved by the Indian regulatory agency, but there are no published data on test performance in India. We validated a research use only version of this new HIV-1 viral load assay in India, in a hospital setting where GeneXpert was already used for tuberculosis testing."

Computer-aided reading of TB chest radiography: moving the research agenda forward to inform policy (post)
Key gaps limit the evidence base for computer-aided reading of TB on chest radiography. An article published in the European Respiratory Journal describes a research agenda to fill them.

Abstract
Point-of-care TB diagnosis may lead to faster treatment (post)
Performing a molecular test for tuberculosis during a patient visit to a rural clinic in South Africa, rather than performing the test at a centralised laboratory, greatly reduced the time to treatment for patients who did not have a drug-resistant form of the disease. This is according to the findings of a randomised, controlled trial published online in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
New diagnostics tool, the Xpert Ultra assay, improves detection of TB (post)
Washington, DC – August 29, 2017 – Researchers have demonstrated a new, improved version of the Xpert MTB/RIF assay, a test for Rifampicin-resistance (RIF-R). The Xpert “Ultra” assay overcomes the shortcomings of the current Xpert assay to significantly improve tuberculosis detection, especially in patients with pauci-bacillary disease. The new Xpert Ultra assay also provides a more reliable detection of Rifampicin resistance (RIF-R). The research is published this week in mBio, an open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.
