Nationwide programme to test all TB patients in India (post)

Beginning this month, health authorities will commence a nationwide programme to test every tuberculosis (TB) patient for signs of resistance to first-line drugs.

Point-of-care CRP test may help detect TB in some people with HIV (post)

A point-of-care test for C-reactive protein (CRP) may detect tuberculosis in people with HIV and low CD4-cell counts who are starting antiretroviral therapy (ART), researchers suggest.

Paper-based TB test could boost diagnoses in developing countries (post)

Diagnosing tuberculosis (TB) early can allow patients to receive the medicine they need and also help prevent the disease from spreading. But in resource-limited areas, equipment requirements and long wait times for results are obstacles to diagnosis and treatment. To tackle this problem, scientists report in ACS Sensors the development of a fast, paper-based tuberculosis test that can be read with a smartphone.

Point-of-care assay zeros in on drug-resistant TB mutations (post)

An investigational assay identified a variety of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tuberculosis) mutations to certain drugs used to treat tuberculosis, researchers found.

Generex announces new clinical trial of Hema Diagnostic Systems’ Rapid 1-2-3® TB point-of-care tests (post)

MIRAMAR, Fla., September 20, 2017--Generex Biotechnology Corporation (OTCPink:GNBT) (www.generex.com) today announced the participation by its subsidiary, Hema Diagnostic Systems LLC (www.hemadiagnosticsystems.com), in a diagnostic clinical trial for tuberculosis in Sub-Saharan African countries. The trial is being conducted by a number of international collaborating institutions and the results of the trial will determine the accuracy and clinical utility of the Rapid 1-2-3® Hema Tuberculosis EXPRESS® TB-XT and the Rapid 1-2-3® Hema Tuberculosis EXPRESS® TB-XT3 point-of-care tests as primary triage assays for the presence of active tuberculosis, or as part of a combination of tests used for that purpose.

India rolls out new TB diagnostic technology aimed at detecting child cases (post)

Newly published estimates on child mortality from tuberculosis paint a dismal picture. Almost 200,000 children under 5 died of TB globally in 2015, a far higher number than previously thought and enough to place TB among the top 10 causes of child mortality worldwide, according to the September 2017 issue of the Lancet. Yet, nearly all the children who died from the disease did not receive treatment, indicating a “substantial scope to reduce this burden,” the article said. Therefore, despite the currently dire situation, there is a silver lining for countries that are bearing the heaviest burden of the disease.

TB and MDR-TB diagnosis goes the 'Make in India' way (post)

India, with its high tuberculosis (TB) and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) burden, has long been looking for an affordable, high-sensitivity test to be used in the most peripheral health facilities with least technical complexity, minimal infrastructure and training. To address the issue, the state health department has now come up with a cost-effective measure of using 'Make in India' initiative to identify TB cases.

Sequencing test enables precise identification of drug-resistant TB (post)

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. and SAN FRANCISCO - Oct. 9, 2017 - Two studies led by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) document how a new advanced genetic sequencing approach can help thwart the growing worldwide threat posed by drug-resistant mutations of tuberculosis (TB).
