One in every 20 children, who were diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) at Mumbai’s private hospitals between September 2014 and April 2016, had drug-resistant forms of the infection, revealed data by Private Provider Interface Agency (PPIA), which operates under the supervision of the BMC. Under the PPIA initiative, 1,826 paediatric cases were reported by 116 doctors during the period.
Shortened regimen for MDR-TB shows good results for children (post)
The use of the shortened 9-month treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), known as the ‘Bangladesh regimen’ has shown to be successful in 83% of children and adolescents diagnosed with rifampicin-resistant (RR) TB.
Preventable deaths of children with HIV (post)
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 150,000 children with HIV under 15 years of age died of opportunistic infections in low-to-middle income countries in 2014 alone. But a study recently published in the journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases suggests that not only were many of these infections and deaths potentially preventable had the children received antiretroviral therapy (ART) to support their depleted immune systems, but doing so in future would result in annual savings of close to USD$ 18 million per year for health organizations around the world because they would reduce the costs of treating the diseases the children develop.

Levofloxacin was safe and well tolerated in children with and without HIV in long-term use. The data provide additional support for its inclusion in paediatric TB treatment and prevention regimens. [1]

Mozambique: Over eight thousand children show signs of TB (post)
Maputo — More than 300,000 children between the age of six months and five years old were screened for tuberculosis during Mozambique's National Health Week which ended on 29 July. According to figures released by the Ministry of Health, over eight thousand children presented signs of tuberculosis.
New TB drug for children introduced in Papua New Guinea (post)
A new tuberculosis (TB) drug for children was launched today (August 9) by the PNG Paediatric Society, in partnership with World Health Organisation, National Department of Health, NCD Health, Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and Exxon Mobil.
