NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ, May 27, 2020 — The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for a new pediatric formulation of SIRTURO® (bedaquiline). SIRTURO® is now indicated for use as part of combination therapy in the treatment of adult and pediatric patients (5 years and older and weighing at least 15 kg) with pulmonary multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR‑TB). In the U.S., the medicine should be reserved for use when an effective treatment regimen cannot otherwise be provided.

11 June 2020, Geneva, Switzerland– The Stop TB Partnership’s Global Drug Facility (GDF) today announced the addition of child-friendly bedaquiline 20 mg tablets to the GDF Pediatric DR-TB Initiative. The US FDA approval of the medicine, on 27 May 2020, marks a new milestone for all-oral DR-TB regimens in children who are older than 5 years of age and weighing more than 15 kilograms. These children will now benefit from the same optimized treatments being provided to their parents – no more injections for anyone.

WHO public call for data on the management of TB in children and adolescents (post)
24 July 2020, Geneva | WHO is initiating the development of updated guidelines on the management of TB in children and adolescents. The second edition of the Guidance for national tuberculosis programmes on the management of tuberculosis in children was published in 2014. Since then, several recommendations included in this guidance have been updated as part of other WHO guidelines, including recommendations on TB preventive treatment, treatment of drug-resistant TB, rapid diagnostics. An update to the TB screening guidelines is currently in process.
Higher risk of active TB infection in children living with infected adults (post)
Among a cohort of children living in contact with sputum smear-positive adult tuberculosis (TB) patients on Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS), roughly half the children were suffering from tuberculosis or tubercular infection, according to a follow-up study published in BMC Infectious Diseases.

Ltd are teaming up to raise global awareness to curb TB in children, #StopTBwithHelloKitty, at a virtual unveiling event held today in Geneva, Switzerland. On a global scale, approximately 1.2 million children contract TB every year, with an estimated 200,000 children needlessly dying from the disease.
